5th Anniversary cookout/tournament April 20th
America’s first public court will be celebrating its 5th anniversary with a big tournament and cookout party on April 20th. The big event will feature several tournaments – singles and doubles action along with age bracket games. Plans are still being worked out for the games, which will start at 5pm that Saturday afternoon. There will be some games with prize money with 100% payouts. Actual programs of the games will be printed similar to a pro jai-alai version and handed out to all attendees. No gambling allowing. Players MUST register via our message board or via text or in person by April 18th. You will receive a confirmation text Friday April 19th. Failure to register for the event will place you in the SUB category at game time only. Several notices will be given to remind you to register. Jai-alai fans, friends and family are encouraged to attend. A BBQ will feature “gourmet” hot dogs and hamburgers, sodas, water and much more at modest cost. Rain date – Sunday, April 21 at 3pm.
As you know, the court will be remodeled along with wall extensions shortly. It is not known if this will be complete in time for the tournament, or even hinder the event. We will keep you posted.

Anthony takes 2012 NJAA title
Anthony Sutton, considered by most as one of the top amateur players in the country, regained the NJAA Championship Title in 2012 with an amazing .572 winning percentage.
A total of 1081 games were played in 2012, as compared to 910 for 2011. About 45 players appeared in league sanctioned games. Last year, George nipped out Anthony for the title with a .471 winning average to Anthony’s .468 average. Anthony won the title in 2010, the first year records of all games were tabulated. He blamed losing out last year to a fractured and torn wrist, which clearly disabled him considerably.
Mike played in the most games, 1046 and had the most wins with 328. The top doubles team was Anthony and Thomas with a record of .679.
Singles championship also went to Anthony, with Rule a surprising second place, followed by Mark, Scott King and Laca.
The biggest gainers and losers in 2012 vs. 2011 were Anthony with +.104 and Chip +.075. Chip came in an amazing second place overall in winning percentage with a .503. The biggest losers were Laca, down .109 and Mark, down .085. “A & A” (age and arthritis) may be catching up to Laca, who has also had difficulty getting use to the Matt Ball vs. 35 years of using the lacrosse ball. Most other players improved with the Matt Ball, including Scott King, whose average surged over 100 points by using it. Other improvement in play with the new ball was clearly noticed with players like Chis, Rule and Eric Channel 28.
The 2013 season promises to be a good one – Rocco will be playing fulltime, Scott King will have a full season with a ball more familiar to his style, Anthony is smoking hot with his great catching and throwing, the return of another ex pro, Puryear Parks alum Derek Smith is back and excited as ever about playing. T Mobile Mark, winner of the first NJAA tournament four years ago, looks to rebound this year, while Julio continues to play at a near pro level. Channel 28 Eric is improving and is confident he can win the title this year. George will also be in the running with his aggressive style of play. Chip continues to amaze and should contend, and look for Rule to start “ruling”. Another ex-pro, Paul B. of our old Seminole-Largo leagues from the 80s, may be making more appearances as his kid gets a little older now. Other players to keep an eye on include Dave “No show” Sellers and Kullster. Magic Mike, Seminole King, Thomas, Armando all continue to improve with the new Matt Ball and are looking for a good season.
No telling whatever happened to Matt the Mummy, Luis, Gino, Javy, and even NJAA directors Paul K and Tom “Corky” DeMint.
Happy birthday to Paul H., our senior player who is now 69 years young!
Former Pro and Puryear Park alum Derek Smith returns
The NJAA roster got even stronger, as former Tampa pro player Derek Smith has returned to St. Pete after working in Vermont for quite some time. Puryear Park’s first player to go pro made an appearance at the court Tues (Jan 8th), getting a firsthand view of the new “Matt” ball and was quite impressed with the ball. There was some pretty good action that night on the court, with some good players throwing some pills. Derek was never a fan of the lacrosse ball (like most others) and is contacting Javier. The first player to greet him on the court was Channel 28 Eric M, who produced the TV interview on him from the mid 90s.
